Germany is known to Denmark's largest trading partner. As the largest economy in Europe, Germany has had and still has a huge impact on developments in Europe.

At the master's program in German you learn about German society, culture, history and of course the language. You also learn to convey all this to a wide audience. You improve you even more in the German language, so your pronunciation and the written and oral grammar are honed and you end up with almost sound like a real German.

You continue and get further insight into the history of Germany and how German has affected the Danish language. You get to study deeply, but nuanced insight into German, which is not only important in Germany but also in much of Central and Eastern Europe. Upon graduation you can boast to master the use of modern German as it is spoken entirely from northern Germany to southern Germany.

At the same time you will be the holder of a basic understanding of the historical, geographical and cultural contexts as German is a part. You must decide whether you want to train you to become a teacher in German, as many do, or whether you want to receive training targeted to business, where there is great demand for people trained in German. Whichever line you choose, you can study everything from medieval poetry to foreign language teaching and rhetoric.

In the business line it subjects such as intercultural communication, media and information or worse importance. If you choose to study towards becoming a teacher of German, you will get close to the literature of Hesse, Rilke, Kafka, Grass and Goethe, as well as get acquainted to include the great German thinker Nietzsche. That way you will learn to analyze texts and place them in their proper historical context and you will build up a picture of German literature from the Enlightenment to the present day.

There is also history lessons at the studio where ligges emphasis on the period after 1750. Specific knowledge you have about the social life in Germany, Switzerland and Austria after year 1945. By knowing the historical, cultural and linguistic aspect of it, put you in a position to to consider current issues as the proliferation of neo-Nazi movements in the former GDR, the Germans squeezed identity, national pride after the 2nd World War and Germany's significant role in the EU.

The study requires a lot of commitment from you, both in lessons and in preparation. This is a reading group a must both academically and socially. At the studio in Århus have an association called Kaffee-Kino showing German films, and the Stammtisch you can meet with your fellow students in the Student bar. The association Kolloquium am Mittwoch organizes lectures and discussions about anything related to Germany to do.

There is also due. Denmark's close location of Germany often have the opportunity to speak German with Germans - for example. during one of the frequent guest lectures, field trips in Germany or in a student exchange in a German speaking country. To end the MSc by writing a thesis on a chosen topic that you deal with on a high theoretical level.


Job Opportunities

With a master's degree in German, you have basically an opportunity to become a teacher or translator / interpreter. Some Danish export / import companies hire students with good knowledge of German to undertake market conditions and connections to our great German neighbor to the south. You can also seek employment as an employee, for example, a consulting firm or advertising agency, which has operations in Germany.
