Musicology is a fun and exciting learning, where you are dealing with music and the whole popular culture that are attached to it. You will not be educated as to the Conservatory, but you learn to write music and play some music.
The study also provides the opportunity for practical training in a particular instrument, so you can work creatively and scientifically with the music. You read texts about the history of music and how it has had an impact on society and especially its political messages - it can be Bruce Springsteen's indirect criticism of the Vietnam War in "Born in the USA 'or Bob Dylan's socially critical songs a la " The Times Are A-Changing ". You learn how scientific theories used to analyze and interpret the music in all its forms. Specifically, are you after graduation able to compose music, write about music and even perform musically.
You learn notation so you can actually write music without an instrument in the hand. You learn about the different sounds and their structure, and how to combine them. In addition, you also learn a lot about acoustics and general concepts from the world of music.
So if you want to learn how to write the best songs and maybe become a songwriter for revues or singers instead of being a performer, or perhaps to film music, it's the training you need to take.
The thorough knowledge you get to the music's structure and history and how to use music for various purposes gives you an edge you can use in real life.
