Literature is an exciting study where you can cultivate interests as reading poetry, novels, fiction, prose, go to the theater and study much of the written culture. Literature is also the doctrine of how writers and artists have chosen to interpret life and the world through literary works or epic poems. You will have the analytical tools to explain, interpret and analyze literature on many levels, as well as a basic understanding of how literature characterizes society and its development.
With Comparative Literature you get a studio that has the whole world literature as a field. You'll be able to read literature from all periods in world history. From the ancient Greeks as Homer, Sophocles, Plato and Aristotle to contemporary writers like Tom Kristensen, Frank Hunter, Karen Blixen, Ernest Hemingway, Stefan Zweig, Dostoyevsky and many more.
Literature is also the study of the history and the various "isms" cultural theory in its many ramifications, sociology and man's relationship to the written media, as well as the anthropology of man's place in a larger cultural context. On Literature is read mainly books of European and American writers.
It is not only the books you need to read and analyze, and it is not in line with the way you analyze poems and novels in high school.
You will also be introduced for movies and music and even art and architecture as you learn to analyze and understand in the context they were created. What has made to society influenced writers and artists to write what they did and how can you date a literary reference from what is written?
Depending on which university you choose has the slightly different focus areas.
Here are some of the areas, however, they all basically comes around:
- Comparative Literature, with works from antiquity to the present day.
- Literary Analysis, with all the elements that are to analyze in comparison to what the text is composed.
- History of criticism and period studies. This will familiarize you with a particular period or author.
- Literary theory that is fundamental to understanding the various theories and issues that are in the literature. It is the relationship between the individual and society or written and reality.
- The modern culture history. Here the focus is on art, both visual arts and painting, as well as movies and photos. It is today's cultural development that comes through here.
