This form of yoga is practiced in a flow and focus on the breath, to follow the practitioner's movements.
There are many similarities with Vinyasa yoga since Vinyasa means flow, and therefore Ashtanga yoga is often called Ashtanga-Vinyasa yoga. Both yoga types are more dynamic and does not offer as many and as long pauses, as they have in Hatha yoga.
The point of Ashtanga yoga is to get in good shape, where you train your flexibility and strength, as well as being more durable.
It is a powerful form of yoga, as I said, consists of a series of exercises performed in a flow. Breathing and the movements follow each other and thereby get the athlete to increased energy levels and a purgative internal heat. The meditative aspect comes in when you concentrate on the body and breath, and is therefore a natural part of teaching.
You will throughout the education cycle through the individual, opening and warming exercises. During the exercises go on to become more physical and mentally demanding. The training ends with a relaxation. Yoga instruction is based on the original oriental philosophies about yoga as the path to a greater inner peace and joy.
You can become a yoga teacher, or you can just use it in everyday life at home to keep you in good shape.
