A skibsmaskinists job is primarily to ensure that all equipment on board is functioning as they should.
If you have been sailing for 24 months, you as a machinist part of the crew subsequently. You can then serve as chief engineer on ships up to 2999 kW engine power.
Maskinistuddannelsen is ideal if you are trained in the iron and metal and have the desire to work at sea. The program is also ideal as a superstructure, if you already have a maritime marine mechanic or able seaman. For it is organized such that you need not go through the whole course if you have already passed some of the items. Do you have sufficient søerfaring, you do such. not take søpraktik.
The program is divided into 3 sections. First, there are 20 weeks of theory, then three months at sea (which can be skipped if you have already been at sea) and ends with 10 weeks of theory.
You are taught in maritime safety, maritime law and call service. These courses help to give you a basic education that you can build on, if at any time you wish. Additionally, there are English classes with special focus on the maritime language and science of hydraulics, pneumatics and motor learning.
It is you who will act as supervisor on the ship when you are graduated, so it is important that you also naturally of some good leadership qualities.
