Nicolai listed in one of the largest and most complete historic school building construction. Today you will find here cultural history, culture for children, events, design, art and film.

Nicolai five school buildings that were built from 1856-1908 in the School Street / Blæsbjerg Street, and from the late 1940s together was called Sct. Nicolai School. The complex shows how school construction developed in this period, while the city's population grew explosively. Nicolai is the center of a "Latin Quarter", which also included Kolding Gymnasium (now Social Services), Technical School and the private daughters School (both now Kolding Realskole).

Sct. Nicolai School closed in 1983, and then there was a period Youth, Music School and Early Childhood Meeting Place in parts of the school complex. In 2004, an agreement with Kolding Municipality on renovation of the old school buildings and converting them to a cultural complex. The task was entrusted to architect living room Dorthe Mandrup in cooperation with landskabssarkitekt Kirsten Jensen Architects.

The five school buildings in the complex are:

Borgerskolen, built in 1856 (now Nicolai History)

The school is a simple classical building. The façade erected a blackboard with the donors names and the inscription "Lord, in your light we see light". It was built as Citizen School (Payment School, Heldagsskole), later the Pre-school and later Help School (until 1968) and finally Youth. School doctor and school Dentistry has had offices in this building, which since 1988 has been protected.


Free School built in 1879 (now Nicolai for Children)

The school is built to Friskole (Half Day School) in 1879. The difference between Free School and Paying School was abolished in the early 1900s, so that all children then got free full-day lessons. In Frisko Lens basement there were 1898 children's meals.


Gymnastics house built in 1881-82 (now Nicolai Scene)

Gymnastics The house was used by all the students. Architect was Royal. building inspector, LA Winstrup. He was also the architect of the Daughters School, Kolding Town Hall, Sct. Nicolai Church and several churches in the area. The style is Italian Renaissance, Gymnastics house has for many years under the name Katrine Gadesalen been used for concert hall for classical music and exhibitions. The building is listed.


Girls school built in 1898 (now Nicolai Art and Design)

The building was used the first year for free school, but after Ålykkeskolen had been built in 1904, divided Kolding School Systems in Pre-school boy School and Girls School. The older boys came Ålykkeskolen while older girls went to the girls school. The school was designed by architect Johan Chr. Fussing Italian Renaissance. He also designed the nearby Technical School and Ålykkeskolen.


Probationers built in 1908 (now Nicolai Film)

When the Civil School was too small for Pre-school, built another school building facing Blæsbjerg Street in 1908. Architect Robert V. Schmidt, who also designed most private railway stations in Kolding area. In this school building was also a gymnasium.
