D. 31 May 2016 it was decided to introduce a 3-year trial period where the age limit for driving is lowered from 18 to 17 years. The scheme comes into force on. 1 January 2017, then 17-year-old may be allowed to take driver's license and drive a car as long as they have a companion in the car that meets the requirements for companions.

The scheme aims to reduce the number of accidents which young people are involved in and are inspired by Germany and the Netherlands where it has successfully brought the number of accidents down, thanks to similar schemes.

How are the requirements for you as a companion:

1) You must be at least 30 years old

2) You must have a driving license and have at least 10 years experience of driving a car

3) You must not have been banned from your driver's license, either conditional or unconditional, over the last 10 years.

4) You must be able to take over the lead of the car legally. This means that you must not have a blood alcohol greater than 0.5, or be so tired or sick that you can not properly lead car.

5) You must have your license on you, otherwise you will be fined.

6) When you are accompanying you must sit in the front passenger seat next to the 17-year-old.

7) It is an offense for you as a companion to encourage the driver of the car for reckless driving.

These are the rules for 17-year-old will run with a companion:

1) Your parents must give written permission you can drive a car before you can start driving education.

2) Driver's license training should begin when you are 16 years and 9 months - 3 months before you fill the 17th
