Students: How to start a webshop

Students: How to start a webshop

Do you have time while they study - and perhaps a contractor in the stomach?

It's easier than ever to become an online shop today. With the completion programmed systems and few hundred bucks a month you have the opportunity to sell goods at home from your apartment when you're not studying - and thereby use the study to build the business up.

There are several advantages.

First, it may be that you end up having a big business, and thereby also good business. Perhaps the company and the web shop, you continue after the study.

Equally important - perhaps more important - is that you learn how to manage a business. You learn more people to know. After completing the study, you have a bigger network through your shop than what you have gained through study. That you have gained through your business is probably even more worthwhile.

All in all a good investment.

But how do you get started?

Select the item you may have in store

You should first choose a product you may have in store at home in the apartment. It excludes appliances, but opens the door for instance for småelektronik or hobby items.

As your shop becomes better known and get more customers, you need to have a larger storage to keep up. The apartment is good for the first period and the smaller items you sell, the longer it can operate.

Shopify or WooCommerce

You should build your shop in one or more existing systems set up for the purpose.

It may be:

  • Shopify
  • Magento
  • WooCommerce WordPress

Or one of many others. The advantage of choosing one of the existing systems is that you are engaged in a short time and get a small monthly fee.

As a beginner-friendly system, we particularly recommend WooCommmerce or Shopify.

Heavier shop systems like Magento - such as costume shop Festli built with - requires that you know more about e-commerce and the various systems. Magento can be more, but also requires more of your user and are therefore not ideal for beginners.

Social media to find your customers

Once you have the web shop ready products ready and willing to run down to the mailbox with your first orders you need to find your customers.

You get your customers to your shop using marketing - online marketing is obvious, now that you have a shop.

To start with, you should especially consider the use of social media. Here you can for example join groups where those who use your products are assembled. A good example of this is the yarn shop Filato whose owners are actively involved in groups where yarn enthusiasts share their recipes and help each other with feedback to knit and crochet. It is free to participate in groups and only costs the time, the owners use to get in touch with their potential customers; time course is well spent.

In addition to the social media you can Google and find out more about:

  • Search engine optimization
  • PPC advertising
  • newsletters

As the main channels to drive traffic to your store.

As a student shop one of the easiest businesses to start because you can drive it out of your apartment - and it is simultaneously a great way to learn more.
