THIRD WEEK: CHALLENGING LECTURES and festive common ride (published 14.09.2009)
In my first post I wrote that I looked forward to the actual teaching was to begin, and that I was looking forward to that level would be slightly higher. It is now. I at least have to read carefully the curriculum in a lecture to understand the substance.
Motivation for home studios
It is now also very nice that there is a challenge in the fabric, otherwise it would quickly become too boring, and I would start to skimp on home studios. It is a good motivation for me to be a little smånervøs whether I can do it, as it forces me to read more. Moreover, it is great to get the ahaoplevelse that comes with when you finally understand something before has teased and been difficult. We are beginning to have more hours in our basic groups. We have a great group basis in physiology and a smaller base group in nursing. I actually quite like the fact that we will be divided into basic groups in some subjects. Both because it is necessary with a little supplement to the lectures, but also because in small groups are easier to get on the field and be a part of teaching.
shaken together
In the last week we have been at freshers' trip for a few days and it has been really fun. Given that we are just barely a hundred students on the team, it's almost impossible to learn all know. I discover after three weeks on the team, still new people that I had not quite noticed before. A trip like this gave good opportunity to teach people better acquainted and familiar you become with alcohol in the blood a bit more open, outgoing and talkative, making it easier to be shaken together. There was organized orienteering with beer mile, soap wrestling, football with plastic mug on the eyes and more during the day and in the evening there was a theme party. The theme was "Bad Taste" and we met up at the party wearing our ugliest clothes for communal and funfair. All had made much of it, and there was a good atmosphere and great support around the challenges tutors gave us, even if there were penalties for breaking the rules, for example, could be to eat disgusting things or bottoms of beer. So this was my last diary entries but definitely not the end of my education. There are still a lot of new things to learn and I am looking forward to that I even when I am qualified as a nurse, can look back and put myself in the thought and consideration, I made myself about the study and the profession when I was completely new and ignorant about the whole thing.
SECOND WEEK: STARTED SERIOUSLY (published 07.09.2009)
Then school started in earnest. We have at least begun the actual teaching and læselektierne has been more extensive than they were in the first week. Now I call it homework, but it is in reality not. The curriculum, as declared to the exam after the first module. Until now I have in elementary school and in high school got homework from time to time, and I have been called to account for whether I had prepared myself for an hour or not, but here on the nursing school, it is up to me whether I want and need to read the pages as the curriculum for the exam. I must here even take responsibility for and assess the lectures that are important to me and how well I must prepare myself for them. I need to get used to this way of going to school.
Something to fear?
We have in the last week had our first anatomy / physiology hours. I have a feeling that these hours are the most feared by many in the study - including myself - because the subject is very rote learning, and because it simply just was going to be quite difficult. That's what I heard from former nurse students. Now it may of course be difficult to assess the integrity of the profession from the few hours we've had, but so far, I think it works challenging but also affordable, which probably is closely linked to the good review, we had to lectures. The "holes", I had after reading the fabric was explained and filled out for the lectures. The last week all the practical details fell into place. I've bought all my books to the first module and I've got my student card, which all in all was not a very cheap place.
practical challenges
I also got going with the internal network, which is being used at the school. This is where schema changes, local changes, powerpoint shows and other professionally relevant material is posted. The very fact that we had to learn to use a network like this, stressed me a lot the first week, when something like that computer technology has never been my strong point, and I must therefore work a little to get familiar with it. But I madmit that it is not completely impossible to use this network, and I'm thinking that I am a few weeks is completely inside the system. I have generally had much more in control of things in two weeks than I had in the first. I begin to understand the way our curriculum works, I start to teach my fellow students better knowing that I begin to find their way around the school and I start above all to feel like a nurse students.
THE FIRST WEEK (published 31.08.2009)
First week as a nurse student is over, and I am beginning to feel like a part of the school. There are so many new impressions and faces that I must relate to me, so the weekend was a bit overdue. The tingling and the source I had in the stomach the first couple of days, is slowing, but it's all still very new and exciting, and the program is not yet fully become commonplace for me. I wonder if I am already in a few weeks when all the expectations for the training and all the butterflies in the stomach has settled, is much more relaxed in the new environment?
Mixed feelings up to study
The last weeks before the start of school has been characterized by many different emotions. At first I was a bit nervous, I wonder had come in, and the media's publication of the increasing number of applicants for the nursing did certainly not better. I was suddenly afraid they just this year where I have applied, had to reject a lot of applications. It was therefore a great relief when I stood with the letter of acceptance by hand.
Prelude to teaching
We have already started teaching, or at least the prelude to teaching. We deal a lot with learning styles and basic ways to get as much out of teaching on as possible. Additionally, there are many practical details and computer forma chemicals, which must be in place, and part of our hours is therefore that we guides in how computer, student and alarm functions. I am very pleased that we are about to start the actual teaching about nursing, biochemistry and anatomy / physiology, which are the subjects we first have to deal with. In some of the subjects we are divided into basic groups, and I think that's nice, because I find it easier to learn my fellow students to know when we're a small group together than when we sit 100 students to a lecture, which we also do in some subjects. So far I am satisfied with the alternation between the different types of study.
Social events are important
On Thursday were an extension of the school inaugurated, and therefore there was a party for the whole school. This week's Friday, and next week I shall at freshers' trip, so there is ample opportunity to learn the other students even better to know than I have already done in the first week. I think it's great that organized such events, it is important for me that there is a good student at school and that it is not only the professional, the emphasis is on. It is, after all, where most of my days will take place over the next three and a half years.
