A Dutch ranking that measures the impact of research publications places Aarhus University as no. 38 among the 100 most productive European universities.
The Scandinavian universities achieve fine locations in the Dutch Leiden University 's list of the 100 most productive and impactful European universities. Aarhus University together with the University of Copenhagen (no. 41 100), the only Danish representatives of the so-called "green list ", which measures on the impact (in number of citations) of university research publications. The best Scandinavian university is the University of Helsinki as number 13 on the list. The Swedish Karolinska universities, Lund, Gothenburg, Stockholm and Uppsala are all placed in the top half of the list and obtains scores very close to the two Danish universities. The study has five English and four Swiss among the first ten universities.

The ranking from Leiden measure both the extent and impact of research publications at universities, including verifying for marked differences in publishing tradition in various scientific fields. This allows universities example. with a strong focus on science compared with more humanities-oriented universities.

- There has in recent years been increasing focus on rankings and on university production of research publications, says Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen. This ranking is interesting because it is based on data from an international database where researchers' publications and the number of times the publications are cited by other researchers systematically registered. It increases my eyes the credibility of the study, and therefore there is good reason to be proud of the Danish listed locations. At Aarhus University, we can use a ranking of this type to see that we can easily compare with the best universities in Europe, says Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen.

The British magazine Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) publishes an annual ranking list, which ranks universities on several criteria. Some of the criteria are operating with more subjective criteria such as employers' demand for new graduates from universities and a peer review indicator, where individual researchers selects the universities they believe is the best quality. THES list was the University of Aarhus in 2006 ranked as no. 126 in the world. 2007 edition of the THES ranking is expected during November.

Shanghai University publishes an annual ranking list include gives points for Nobel prizes and Fields medals won by university researchers. On the list were the University of Aarhus in 2007 no. 113.
