Bilingual pupils perform better in PISA

Far fewer immigrant students have difficulty reading than ten years ago. But there is still a big difference in the academic achievement of students with and without immigrant backgrounds. 38 percent among the bilingual pupils leave school without functional reading skills, while this only applies to 13 percent of the Danish students.
The study shows PISA Ethnic 2009, published today. PISA Ethnic is prepared based on data from the PISA study in 2009, published in December 2010. The study shows that it is going in the right direction for the bilingual pupils. The proportion of students with lack of functional reading skills have decreased by approximately 22.5 percent from 2000 to 2009. But it also shows that it is too slow in closing the achievement gap between Danish pupils and pupils with an immigrant background. Among immigrant students have 38 percent lack of functional reading skills. Among students without an immigrant background, 13 percent lack reading skills. "I think it is completely unacceptable that so many bilingual pupils still leave school without adequate skills in reading. It can we as a society not be familiar. The government has universal primary outplayed "Professionalism and freedom" and ghetto proposal "Ghetto back to society" comprehensive tools that together will ensure that all students, also bilingual, can leave school with the skills and motivation to continue to educate themselves. The results of PISA Ethnic 2009 underlines just how important it is that we get started immediately. I therefore hope that conciliation will participate constructively in the serious discussion of the two initiatives I very soon convene, "said Education Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.
