New education must improve math skills

At least one thing, companies and secondary schools in common. They lack staff with highly developed mathematical skills, but it will Aalborg University (AAU) now do something about. Therefore AAU creates a new master's degree in Mathematics especially targeted at engineers and economists who are either working or want to work in education, development or research at a level where there are stringent requirements for math skills.
I am Kim Emil Andersen from Vestas, the world's largest wind turbine manufacturer. He is senior specialist in Plant Siting & Forecasting, Vestas Technology, which is an operational development department with responsibility for the development of mathematical tools and models for eg complete risk assessment of new wind power plants. With a new master's degree in mathematics will be plenty of opportunity to improve math skills - In the department, all employees a strong mathematical background, but we have long had difficulty in recruiting staff with the necessary mathematical skills, and therefore we have today is not less than 10 nationalities represented in our 35-man department, says Kim Emil Andersen. And the need for mathematics knowledgeable staff will not decrease in the future, on the contrary. - Future development will require that employees with strong skills in math works closely with the department's civil engineers and economists, who often fall short in terms of the mathematical understanding. The need for cooperation between highly specialized mathematicians and economists and engineers will be greatly enhanced in the future and therefore we look very positively at Aalborg University master's degree in mathematics, as it will equip civil engineers and economists to work on the mathematically advanced research and development, says Kim Emil Andersen. Also at secondary and vocational secondary education (HHX and HTX) offers master degree in mathematics very welcome, showing expressions of example rectors Hasseris Gymnasium in Aalborg, Dronninglund Gymnasium as well as from the Ministry of Education advisers on hhx- and HTX area. The reason is that some teachers of mathematics at secondary schools today do not meet the academic requirements that the education ministry has set, and the problem will grow in the near future. So many math teachers goes for retirement in the coming years, and the exit would be so high that it can not be replaced by the number of graduates who major in mathematics or elective. - Mathematics is the universal language of technical and natural sciences and mathematics also plays a major role in the dissemination and development of economic theory. We therefore see our new Master in mathematics as a great opportunity especially economists and engineers who work or want to work in education, development or research that require extensive math skills. Master's degree in mathematics is an excellent upgrading training opportunities, which should not be confused with an actual school teacher training, says Associate Professor Lisbeth Fajstrup from Aalborg University's Department of Mathematics.
