Can you live sustainably on a budget?

It may sound like an impossible task, but it is possible to live sustainably on a budget. It just requires that you are willing to make some changes in your lifestyle and priorities. Here are five tips on how you can save money and at the same time live more sustainably.

1. Give your things a new life

Upcycling is a form of recycling, where you reuse things in a way that gives them a new and better life. It can be anything from painting old furniture in a different color space, to sewing new fabrics on old clothes. It is a sustainable and creative way to recycle your things, and it is far better for the environment than throwing them away.

Some examples of upcycling:

  • Paint old furniture a new color or give it a new fabric.
  • Sew new fabrics on old clothes.
  • Transform old boxes into storage for things.
  • Use old books to make beautiful decorations.
  • Turn an old computer or TV into a new media player or streaming device.

2. Eat less meat

Meat production is one of the biggest sins against the environment. So if you want to be more sustainable, you can eat less meat, or make vegetarian and vegan dishes. Meat has also become very expensive, so you can actually kill two birds with one stone. By eating less meat, you can both do something good for the environment and your own personal budget.

3. Buy food close to its expiry date

Food games are the huge problem. Every year, 540,000 tonnes of edible food is thrown away in Denmark. A large part of that food comes from supermarkets that do not manage to sell their goods before the last expiry date. Therefore, many supermarkets reduce the price of products that are nearing their expiry date. When you buy these products, you not only save money, you also help to fight food waste.

4. Avoid plastic

Plastic products are harmful to the environment because they are made from chemicals that do not break down in nature. They can therefore remain in nature for many years, until they are thrown into the sea or land in another place. Plastic products are also harmful to animals because the animals often swallow pieces of plastic which can cause them serious diseases. There are many other organic materials that break down more easily in nature. You can therefore choose products made from these materials rather than products made from plastic.

To reduce your consumption of plastic, you can, among other things:

- Use reusable shopping bags instead of disposable bags

- Make lunch boxes with reusable mugs and containers instead of plastic bags and mugs.

- Avoid buying products that are wrapped in plastic when it is not necessary.

5. Go hunting for flea markets

It is good for the environment to buy old things at flea markets because it reduces the need for the production of new things. This makes flea markets an excellent sustainable way to acquire your new possessions. In addition, flea markets are also often cheaper than regular stores, which is good for you who are trying to save money.
