Ripley's Believe It or Not! does not look like much from the outside, but is filled with fun and games inside. Here you can experience people, animals and things in grotesque situations that you would think is a lie. Cartoonist, the explorer, the announcer, the experiencer, illustrator, collector and viewfinder noticeably equal and different things, a man who lived a life that can best be summed up by the expression he himself created; "Believe It or Not!"
His life's work, his experiences, his art, the stories he told and the experiences he had will always be the foundation of everything Ripley Entertainment stands for.
Ripley was one of the most famous people in the world through the first half of the 20th century.
Born / LeRoy baptized in 1890 in Santa Rosa, California, "Roy" was an avid artist and an accomplished sportsman At a very young age. He peaked at semi-pro baseball player at age 13 and he illustrated posters that advertised the games.
At age 14, he sold his first cartoon to LIFE Magazine eight dollars. At age 15, worked Ripley at the San Francisco Bulletin and then he came on to the San Francisco Chronicle.
In 1913 he moved to New York and that 'Robert' instead of 'Leroy', he began to sketch sports cartoons for the New York Globe. After having done so for several years. Comic title was originally "Champs and Chumps", but after much negotiation was the title changed to Believe It or Not! The rest is history.
Immediately after tegeneserien was released was the popular Ripley became a verdensomrejser who searched for noticeably straight and incredible stories to use for its internationally known comics. In a time when there were not very many people who traveled out of the country, yes not even out of their hometown that travel was an addiction for him and he took off as soon as he could!
He ventured into unconventional areas in India and the Orient, he visited the people and cultures that most Americans did not know existed. He favorite destination was China, and for several more months after he first was in the Orient, Ripley wrote his stuff during the Rip Li. It was through these travels, he collected a lot of noticeable right and unbelievable souvenirs that later became an extensive collection of fantastic noticeable similarities and stories, which today still entertains the public.
An Uncommon Man
Ripley was known as being extremely eccentric; His friends called him "his own greatest Believe It or Not!". Although he was known as being extremely shy, he dressed in flamboyant color combinations, he wore often band of bat wings, helmets marrow coolie jerseys and Eskimo parkas. He had an approximately 8.5 m long boa snake as a pet and he let squirrels and chipmunks run around him while he drew.
He thought that both smoking and card games were evil entities, but he drank himself to social occasions and he was known to be popular with the ladies, sometimes he had up to 5 lovers living at the same time. He loved to sail and acquired a Chinese JunkAs he called "Mon Lei" or "Infinity", though he could not swim a heartbeat. It also was rumored that he changed his date of birth from d. December 26 to Christmas Day to highlight his eksentrisitet!
Given his incredible life, it is perhaps fitting that even Robert Ripley's death left the world wondering about the circumstances of "Believe It or Not!" As a 58-year-old died Robert Ripley as he took the 13.episode of his TV program, an episode which was about death and the death ritualier. He fell on the show and was taken to hospital and immediately afterwards he was pronounced dead of a heart attack.
Ripley's legacy and what he brought to the world are alive in all the Ripley's believe it or not! museums and his Believe it or not! Comics continues as usual! Today is the daily cartoon shown in nearly 200 newspapers worldwide in 42 countries and in 17 languages. The majority of the exhibits in Believe it or not! The museums are based on collections of assorted strangeness that Ripley was collected through his world travels.
