PISA 2009: Danish students still in the middle group

Danish students maintain the level in reading and science, which is on average with the other OECD countries, while the level in mathematics remain above despite decline. Such is the Danish main results of the PISA survey among 400,000 students in 65 countries.

Education Minister Tina Nedergaard takes the Danish PISA results note: "These figures show once again that although we have one of the world's most expensive schools, we do not have one of the world's best schools. The Government will change that. Main focus: Reading

Since 2000, PISA studied mathematics, science and reading among students aged 15 and in turn had one of the subject areas as the main focus. In 2009 the reading. Among OECD countries ends Danish pupils' reading skills in 18th place. Students with no real reading skills is almost unchanged at about fifteen percent, while the volume of particularly good readers is about five percent, slightly below the average for other OECD countries. In general, the countries in the PISA survey, there has been a decrease in the number of daily readers. Just a half-hour daily pleasure reading gives significantly better readers, and the difference in the reading skills of the daily light readers and students who do not read, equivalent to an entire class.

science

In science Denmark turned Danish pupils image with a handsome increase in 2006 - and the boost they have maintained. Denmark is number 19 among the OECD countries. Danish students' science skills are on a par with Norway, Sweden and Iceland.

Mathematics

In maths Danish students remain above average, but has gone a bit back. Among OECD countries, Danish pupils in 12th place. Norway and Iceland goes back and is now on a par with Denmark, while Swedish students' math performance is somewhat below. Asian countries and regions dominate the top five in all three subjects, where only Finland as the only European country manages to mingle very top.

Almost 6,000 Danish primary school pupils have participated in the PISA survey with responses from a total of about 400,000 students in 65 countries. The survey is conducted every three years. Work on the next PISA study is underway and mathematics as the main focus. The countries in the study consists of the 33 member states of the Economic Cooperation OECD and partner countries.
