International Baccalaureate (IB) from 7 to 10

New law makes it possible to expand the number of public providers in Denmark of the international secondary education International Baccalaureate (IB) from 7 to 10. The supply of IB in the public institutions must continue to be part of a free secondary education offering.

The contents of a recently adopted bill that allows the IB can be offered in Denmark of up to 10 public providers. There are currently seven public providers of IB, and supply is expected to gradually increase by 3 new providers. After the latest five years should be assessed whether there is a need for further expansion of the number. IB is a two-year international upper secondary education that can be taken in over 100 countries, including Denmark. The program is available to all young people who meet the requirements to be admitted to a secondary education, and is offered to, among other Danish young people who have gone to school several years abroad and foreign young people who are staying in Denmark longer time. IB is access to higher education in Denmark on equal terms with the other secondary schools. As before, the training will be free to the public institutions. Private colleges will remain free to offer training. Here students generally pay tuition. The Act makes it possible for specific application to approve and provide government subsidies to IB at public general secondary schools and institutions of vocational education, which is approved to offer one or more of the secondary education (stx, hf, HHX and HTX). For the stx and HTX schools with IB it will also be possible to provide and receive reimbursement for the special Danish-year preparation for the IB, pre-IB. Ministry of Education will announce in mid-April the application procedure and a time limit and the criteria for applying for the offering of IB in Denmark. Source: Ministry of Education
